TVPaint vs Toon Boom Anonymous 05/03/2020 (Sun) 02:13:33 No. 502
Two of the leading animation programs in the industry for tv and film but which one takes the crown?
>>502 One's good for stylized animation. The other's good for emulating 3D animation through 2D. One's not better than the other. It's just a matter of preference.
>>502 Honestly I loved the work in both. >>564 It's not really emulation, thought. A program for automatic shading was used on Klaus. The technique of using shadows over 2D characters was introduced several decades ago, Roger rabbit being one of the most notable examples, the thing is, it was quite expensive, it was automatized recently and Klaus was the first movie to use it for a commercial film. I really hope more animated projects would try to use tools like this one in the future. Hell, I've recently heard about a project that can turn animation made in 2s and 3s into 1s: https://youtu.be/IK-Q3EcTnTA

It's Toon Boom for the features, although you'll have to pay up for learning the new tools. For something with no licensing fee required, look into OpenToonz - free to use and open source via the BSD license: https://opentoonz.github.io/e/ Originally used for Ghibli films, but was also used for Futurama and Steven Universe.
