SITUATION UPDATES AND SITE META GENERAL Acid Board owner 09/17/2020 (Thu) 06:59:42 Id:9968b0 No. 1138 [Reply] [Last]
QUESTIONS, ANSWERS, AND GENERAL REQUESTS GO HERE UPDATE MESSAGE - NEW UPDATE 9-23-2020: Tonight's work is done. We fixed 2 small bugs and are also now GEOIP blocking Russia, China, and the JIDF. 8chan.se should be working again soon, along with custom error messages for the tor boards. --------------------------------------- We're back! I just relaunched 8chan.moe on the new server. Thanks to Codexx's hard work on the 8ch.moe clearnet proxy the site was never forced completely offline, but it's certainly good to have the main domain back again. I would like to go over the current site situation and plans from here on: At the moment the new server is running the same HTTP accelerator cache that we set up on the old server, but this cache is being used as a remote proxy. Except instead of being a stopgap like 8ch.moe, this is a robust setup that proxies the entire main site and serves it from the egregiously powerful new hardware. This setup has been placed behind Cloudflare as an extra security layer, but this layer is optional by design. We do not need Cloudflare and the site will not suffer much without it, so them cucking out is only a minor concern. While the main site is being served by the proxy, we will slowly transfer over LynxChan and the site databases to the new server so that we can run everything natively on that hardware as well. This way the older server and the new act as backups for each other. If one goes down, the other takes over serving the site and downtime is minimal. We can keep this up for a while, and with even modest crypto donations, indefinitely. From here we will gradually make the LynxChan move and probably implement new proxy rules to serve site content faster. We now have a multi-layer fallback system - not in our pockets in case of need, but running and ready to go at a moment's notice. And beyond those we still haven't touched the nuclear option yet. We have made significant strides improving Redchannit as well, and it now functions similarly to the main site in all ways but thread user IDs, and believe it or not we're working on a fix for that just for your convenience. Loli boards are currently only on tor, and will remain as such for at least a while as we sort things out with the host. I sent a message to the admins of the panda asking for their advice, so we'll see what they say. In the meantime I ask that any such content be kept there. My next tasks tonight are to port over the .se domain and to implement the GEOIP blocks on the Russians and a few choice others.

Isn't this something we should be concerned about? http://archive.vn/3pBF9 Looks like this sites IP address and the ddos protection is dependent on the pig farmer.

LynxChan 2.4 + Aleph Changelog Anonymous 08/04/2020 (Tue) 02:03:00 Id:5476c9 No. 628 [Reply] [Last]
Changelog The site has been upgraded to LynxChan 2.4. This provides memory optimizations and some improved moderation tools. New Frontend! We have build a new frontend on top of Penumbra. Custom CSS now works! BOs are asked to place their resources on >>>/res/. Fonts are currently not supported; current workaround is to use base64 encoding. Resources hosted off-site are subject to break. New homepage that pays homage to a long-lost home. Logo has been cured of autism. Default Thumbnail has been updated. Yotsuba and Warosu themes have had some tweaks for familiarity. Win95 Theme has been rebuilt to behave better. Tooltip/hover replies should now behave better. Clicking "back" after navigating to a reply should now return you to the correct positon. This was caused by the old side catalog, which has been upgraded. The navigation bar has been adjusted to overflow less often. Text has been converted to tooltips. Default WebM Sound has been added. You can configure it by clicking on "settings" in the navigation bar. Filter by ID and other options have been added. They can be accessed by clicking the "Hide" button. Markdown has been improved. Spoilers should now hide text properly. Markdown nests outward to inward. Added Moe Markdown. For when you're feeling moe! Added (((Echoes)))

Adding some sort of identifier to cross-thread quotes would be nice. It's super fucking annoying to click a quote and not realize it's to another thread and be redirected to a new page.

Project Crescent Isle: Early Launch Edition Acid Board owner 07/28/2020 (Tue) 23:34:24 Id:298ab9 No. 532 [Reply] [Last]
Hello everyone. INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: >>825 I've been teasing this project for a couple of months as I worked out all the implementation details, so here's the payoff. In the classic Dreamcast RPG Skies of Arcadia, the heroes are a band of Blue Rogue air pirates; swashbucking heroes pursued across the world by an evil empire. In the middle of the game the party discovers a tiny, uncharted island in the corner of the map and they turn it into a hidden fortress paradise. A base of operations, safely hidden from their enemies in a place called Crescent Isle. What is Crescent Isle? It is a clearnet portal to 8moe's onion created with the implementation of a specially configured Tor2Web multiproxy coupled to an aggressive HTTP accelerator cache, and protected from DDoS by a CDN. What does it do? It allows anons to potentially access any number of imageboard .onions from the clearnet, using any browser and viewing/posting from anywhere. And they can do it almost as fast as using the site on the clearnet due to the CDN and aggressive dynamic caching system. How does it work? There is a separate server that is currently running the open source Tor, Tor2Web, and Varnish Cache software programs, all specially configured to play nice together and with LynxChan software. The system uses a single .onion site as a default (8moe in our case) but through the use of specially configured custom subdomains a single Crescent Isle server can proxy traffic for any number of imageboard sites on an opt-in basis.

Fucking problems in /b/ Anonymous 09/17/2020 (Thu) 16:13:00 Id:936890 No. 1190 [Reply]
So, are there any mods in random? Because some actual pedo is fucking posting that shit, and I'm hoping there are mods who are working on ridding that vermin.
Seems it was already cleared out anon.
While that is thankfully gone, there is still a person going around posting actual kid photos that while aren't the sexual shit, it's crap that needs removal in /v/ imo.
Its happening again. I made global reports some time ago, not sure if they got deleted yet.

Why can't I archive threads? What can I use to archive a thread if archive.today and archive.org only save the pop-up disclaimer that appears every time you enter Redchannit (the regular 8chan.moe domain isn't an option)?
Either archiving is disabled globally or you are not a staff member on that board.
>>1369 >archiving is disabled globally Must be this since I'm a BO. Oh, well.
We don't currently have Archives enabled, because of the storage requirements. The Archive button is supposed to provide you a link to archive.today for the page you are on (or a search for all archives from the board if you are on an index page). I'm not sure why you're getting a direct LynxChan error instead. We'll look into it when redchannit is back up. We'll also just look into hosting our own archives at a point.

403 forbidden varnish server cache Anonymous 10/01/2020 (Thu) 15:01:55 Id:a87e08 No. 1381 [Reply]
I get "403 Forbidden, varnish server cache." when trying to access certain boards, tried on multiple devices, on tor and clearnet, and through multiple VPN's to make sure the issue is server- side (I am technologically retarded and didnt know what "varnish server cache"meant till i googled it). I hope you manage to get this fixed soon, was enjoying having a place to autistically shitpost again pic unrelated
>>1381 Those boards are temporarily Tor-only to fend off a deplatforming attack. More news will follow soon. For now, you can access it via the Onion link http://4usoivrpy52lmc4mgn2h34cmfiltslesthr56yttv2pxudd3dapqciyd.onion/ Or if you can wait for redchannit.net to come up it will be available there. Redchannit is currently down due to some DNS issues with the registrar, and we're working on resolving it ASAP.

Can we PLEASE have a /leftpol/ board. There are two boards dedicated to fascism for FUCKS sake.

>>99 Consider >visiting a predominately leftyfag site >going "Whaaa I want a /pol/" >then witness the avalanche of being told to fuck off and die So go fuck yourself and as others have pointed out do it yourself if you're so married to being a retard.
I didn't mentioned this earlier, but OP talks with very normalfag-tier speech patterns. There's also the fact that they're completely ignorant of being able to make boards, the existence of a /leftpol/, or the fact that there being two fascism boards on 8chan is meaningless because they are dead like every other board that isn't /v/ Are all /leftypol/ users like this? TORpedo spammers Anonymous 07/15/2020 (Wed) 17:37:30 Id:4315f9 No. 342 [Reply]
I occasionally get some faggot spamming my threads using TOR, is there a way to block him from doing so? I don't want to disable it permanently from my board, I just want to ban it for a few hours a day.
>>342 We're working on an expanded Tor banning system beyond what LynxChan provides. We're not very happy with the control it gives, either. So the short answer is "no", but the long answer is we will add disabling Tor per-board as an initial stopgap soon and then build some more advanced options to help BOs and admins manage Tor users with more granularity.
May I recommend a simple solution of rate-limiting TOR posts per board? And then a more complex solution of requiring an in-browser proof-of-work for tor posting, with the work size exponentially proportional to the tor posts rate.
>>1144 Proof of work is coming in the next LynxChan update. The problem with rate-limiting is that a bad actor can block genuine posters by spamming and that's not fair to them. Proof of Work will allow us to throttle bad actors by banning their bypass while people just trying to post won't be bothered.

QOL / BUGFIX THREAD - SITE UPGRADE EDITION Anonymous Board owner 04/29/2020 (Wed) 04:43:24 Id:37ac2f No. 27 [Reply] [Last]
UPGRADE PROGRESS REPORT FOR LYNXCHAN 2.4. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the site so far. While /v/ is still by far the most active community, more than a few others have begun settling in with us. So far the site has weathered one hack attempt by a Chinese botnet, and 7 DDoS attacks of varying size. We got hit with 3 DMCAs over the TLOU2 stuff, but have otherwise had no legal, host, or registrar problems post (((Esther))), and our server just got upgraded with a shiny new 2TB storage drive. Work on the 2.4 upgrade is around 75% complete. Our goal is to have it finished by the end of the month (on schedule) and we're looking at a half day of downtime on Monday August 3 for the installs, configuration, and other stuff involved. Its a pretty big deal, going well into re-configuring the server itself. Post upgrade you can expect a faster, cleaner site with all the features you expect either right there or on the way including custom CSS. Between (you)s, backlinks, archiving, site stats and board logs and other essentials we're also looking at a few fun new things for you all to play with. There will be minor bugs, because there always are, but we aim to find as many as we can before launch using our test server, and we'll work to wipe out any others that we miss as soon as you guys tell us about them/ Project Crescent Isle, an anti-takedown and anti-deplatforming system that I've been building for the past couple months, has a fully working prototype and the finished production version will be made public alongside the upgrade launch. For bugs please post your OS and Browser versions along with your complaint so we can try to duplicate it.

Frontend Feature Requests Anonymous Admin 06/09/2020 (Tue) 04:32:33 Id:96dae8 No. 134 [Reply] [Last]
Designated thread for all frontend feature requests. If you don't like the way the UI works, if you notice any bugs, or just have some general feedback then you can post it here. We are rebuilding the frontend from scratch, so now is the best time to tell us what you'd like to see. It will be harder to make major changes later.

>>1031 We'll need to clean it up some. For now, you can take the CSS and apply it on your end; there's a number of theming add-ons to facilitate this. If you didn't grab a copy from the thread where I posted it, you can find it as "custom.css" over on >>>/gamergatehq/. >>1026 The first one is probably a quick fix and I'll try to get it included in the next release. I'll need to look into the second; the top bar is primarily served by the backend and changing that might not be straightforward, but I'll see what I can do. >>961 Been working on migrations all week.
