8chan Rules Enforcement and Corner Case Rulings Compendium Anonymous Board owner 11/21/2021 (Sun) 23:49:51 Id: 0a02ed No. 4481 [Reply]
This is a locked thread for archiving the causes and outcomes of corner case rulings vis-a-vis the site's Global Rules. It may be cited as an explanation for rules and policies. The Global Rules page is the "what", this thread will archive the "why" and the "how" for specific instances.
11 posts and 1 image omitted.
Ruling12: Global Rule 2 and the "reporting to law enforcement" clause. The site has a firm policy not to provide user or post information to any third party entity except as required by actual law. The typical example might be responding to a court subpoena demanding the IP address of a person who posted illegal content. There is one exception to this reactive policy that has been clearly stated in Global Rule 2 since the site's earliest days: Images or any other kind of media depicting the sexual abuse of real children is explicitly forbidden and will be reported to law enforcement. This is not an idle threat. While the clause covers the usual types of media like images or videos, it may extend to other factors of a user's posting if that user persistently creates a strong suspicion that sexual abuse or grooming is taking place in the presence of the site. >Why? Child-Sexual-Abuse-Materials (CSAM) are some of the worst things that exist on the Internet, even by the typically lax views of imageboard communities. They and those who post them represent an existential threat to an entire site above the level of any other potentially illegal activity, and their removal takes the highest priority of all moderation actions. On that basis, and to discourage repeat offenders, Global Rule 2 specifically and publicly allows the site administration to report such users if we feel their activity demands it. Any such events that occur will be made public in the course of our normal site transparency reports along with subpoenas and DMCA takedowns.

Feature request Anonymous 05/22/2022 (Sun) 08:27:03 Id: 000000 No. 5581 [Reply]
I noticed that we don't have a specific feature request thread so here one be.
(3.55 KB 900x450 Flag of Seychelles.png)

As for my request I've got a couple. 1. Make .webp convert to .png upon upload. 2. Make it to where deleting and subsequently reuploading flags with exactly the same name as the previous flag will just swap out the new for the old on existing posts instead of permanently erasing the flags from those posts.

Board Owner Support and Migration Requests Codexx Root 12/13/2020 (Sun) 05:27:09 Id: abfacc No. 1651 [Reply] [Last]
This thread is for Board Owners to get support for running their boards. How do I create a board? First, you should see if the board you want to create already exists. Some boards may be marked abandoned, in which case you can put in a board claim. If the board doesn't exist, you can create one yourself. Create an account or log-in by visiting the lightning bolt symbol next to the CSS dropdown at the top of the page. Once there, make sure you have a verified e-mail address. Then, you can scroll to the bottom of the page and find the board creation section. Enter the URI, name, and a description. After you fill out the captcha and submit, you'll have your very own board. How do I claim an existing board? A board will be marked abandoned if the Board Owner has not logged in for a few weeks. Sometimes, this indicates they've gone missing. If the BO cannot be reached then we will hand the board over to a willing replacement. We recommend sending an e-mail to the administration address of 8moeadmin@protonmail.com. Please include your username on the site and the board you are requesting. How do I create custom CSS? There is an upload field on the board settings page for custom CSS. Upload your file there. Custom board assets such as background images, mascots, icons, music, etc should be posted in the appropriate thread on >>>/res/. This board is for board assets only. This way, you don't need to clutter your board with a pinned asset, or worry an uploaded image will fall off the site. How do I create custom JavaScript? This feature is currently disabled. Soon, you'll be able to request custom JS be activated for your board. You can leave that request here.

Mouseover on long filenames causes annoying element wrapping Anonymous 05/17/2022 (Tue) 05:25:23 Id: 784f94 No. 5527 [Reply]
Filenames are truncated to a certain length. On mouseover, it shows the full filename. If the filename is too long, it can trigger an erratic wrapping behavior. You can reproduce it with this post: https://8chan.moe/b/res/352013.html#q413312
>>5527 This is already fixed and will arrive with the next update.
>>5532 Any ETA on the update?
>>5533 The original plan was by the end of May. We've got a little over a week left and a lot of work to do, and there is much testing to be done. But if it's not ready as we go into June then I will have to make some decisions about what to keep and what to push out to the next update. Or, by some miracle, it'll all come together in the next week.

This is the official support thread for https://watch.8ch.moe/ What is this site? A place for anons to stream anything they'd like. You can stream any video you'd like, and users can join chat anonymously. Streams can also be embedded elsewhere for easy sharing. Chat is built around XMPP, so you can connect with any Jabber client. Streams are generic RTMP streams, so you can connect and view them directly. For example, you can watch a stream in VLC instead of on the website. What can't it do? So far, no emotes/images in the chat. This should be available soon. Theme support is poor. The site can have one global theme. User-selectable themes and channel-specific CSS coming soon. The site supports uploading videos and storing clips, but these features are currently disabled. If there's strong interest, I can make it available, but I'd need a way to pay for storage space. Why should I use this? The goal is to provide anons with an easy, convenient way to get a media stream. Other sites actively police uploads to enforce "community guidelines". It can be inconvenient to share some media as a result.

Hey, codexx, is there any chance you can add an option that places chat on the left side of the screen without popping it out?
>>5421 I will look into this, since i would prefer it myself. But I wouldn't expect any major changes until after the major update. I am primarily waiting on new hardware to release for that, so maybe some time later this year.
Two suggestions. Hyperlinks for links posted in chat so we don't need to highlight and open in new tab, and highlighting your username if someone says it so its easier to see if someone is trying to get your attention.

User Support / Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread PART TWO Anonymous 02/02/2022 (Wed) 23:31:35 Id: 17476e No. 4757 [Reply] [Last]
Making a new (unofficial) thread because the other one is full and the admins haven't done something about it. This is a catch-all for site troubleshooting, such as features not working as intended, or for discussion of global rules, policies, and administrative decisions. If you're a regular user and have an issue, post here and we'll do our best to resolve it. Resolved petitions may be merged into this thread for posterity.

>>5209 I'll profile the memory usage and see if we can cut it down. We've made a lot of tweaks to accommodate websockets, so it would be nice to verify there's no memory leaks.
Why does the verifaction take so much time and when I cancel it it blocks me from posting?
>>5412 This happens when Proof of Work (PoW) is enabled. You need a bypass to post. When PoW is on, you need to generate a token to get a bypass. When you cancel it, you don't get a bypass, so you cannot post.

Effective immediately, /b/ has been reassigned under Global Rule 3. While the administration wanted to allow Silvia to retain control in order to coordinate a migration to a new site, this retention of the board was conditional on several factors, including a renewed effort to moderate rulebreaking content. These obligations have been left unmet on his end, including several days with zero moderator activity, a lack of moderation regarding certain posters who have egregiously broken global rules and evaded bans for same, and overall a seemingly concerted effort to "poison the well" and render the board unusable. As a result the adminstrative threshold for activity has been met and the issue is now considered closed, and based on the multiple chances given to fix the board's problems and the failures to follow through this decision may not be appealed. The screencaps included detail the posting of one user in particular, who was globally permabanned for creating global rule-breaking content exclusively to post on /b/, enjoying a conversation with Silvia himself earlier this morning. While ban evasion is likely quite common as we are an anonymous imageboard, Silvia chose to continue allowing him to post with the same name, even reverting bans and restoring deleted content in order to annoy global moderators, as seen in the second image. When confronted in private over the first user, a promise was made by Silvia to keep that user off the board, and that promise has not been upheld. It is worth mentioning that if the rulebreaking users such as this one had been properly banned and an effort made to at least appear to be upholding our rules, the recent rule changes that affected the /cat/ thread would not have been necessary. Allowing users to immediately continue posting under the same name makes the site look as if it does not enforce its own rules, and the host or authorities will not stick around to see the context.

>>5408 >It's only dead because we banned all the posters we don't like! It's not our fault no one posts here! lol >>5409 Probably true, sure. The only issue is that /b/ is a known name, and most people will look to the /b/ board before any other board. And if /b/ is dead, they'd likely not search too far for the "better /b/" anyways--

LynxChan 2.7 + Aleph Changelog: Love Letter Edition Codexx Root 02/20/2022 (Sun) 08:26:48 Id: 7c5adb No. 4917 [Reply] [Last]
Apologies for the late changelog, but 2.7 was a little unfinished and I wanted to see it polished off. This is a combined changelog for 2.7.0 through 2.7.5. Functionality Added Multiboard menu for users with JavaScript enabled. This will let you create, name, and manage Multiboards. This is a first iteration and we have a few ideas for how to improve it. Refactored a number of forms. Custom Thumbnails are now available. Let us know if you think any file formats should have their own thumbnail! You can now send multiple reports at once. Style & Markdown Dice now preserves each roll. These can be viewed by hovering over the roll. 10d6 = 45 Markdown FAQ has been updated. Fixes Fixed board message formatting regression. Fixed Loading text sticking around after a hover reply loads. Fixed some issues with filtering/hiding. Improved XSS security. Thanks to ipsec for bringing this issue to our attention.

>>5246 >>5248 Can you explain why my performance will randomly tank for no good reason when I have a tab of this site open which miraculously disappears and never happens again the moment I open the task manager to see whats going on? Along with the fact there's been no effort to fund the site through donations or ads in the entire 2 years its been running leads me to believe money is being made from it some other way.
>>5395 Can't say I've ever experienced consistent performance issues while running the site. At least not these days. I used to have constant memory leak problems with imageboards but I fixed that by putting my swap file onto an SSD instead of an HDD. I'm pretty sure Acid runs (owns?) a firearm store and Codexx is a full time programmer. I doubt the money they could harvest from some shitty browser based crypto miner would even make a dent compared to their yearly salaries. I think the most logical conclusion is that between the two of them the cost of the site just isn't a significant financial hit.

A Brief Reminder of Fallback Measures Acid Board owner 06/05/2021 (Sat) 04:38:27 Id: fc16f1 No. 3004 [Reply] [Last]
Greetings. With the recent drama passed, I have had some anons contacting me asking if there is a plan or plans on how the site would deal with any sort of major trouble or deplatforming event. Many of you who were here during the "Esther" era already know that we have multiple fallback setups, but it was suggested to me to make a post reminding the oldfags about them and informing the newfags that they exist. If 8moe should go down for a significant time (more than a couple hours) any reason, keep an eye on the site's Twitter and the meta boards of the other imageboard sites. We'll bring updates to the inevitable topics. >If the main domain should be deplatformed <Use the backup domain at https://8chan.se >If THAT somehow gets taken down, which is unlikely as its handled by the guys who handle TPB, we will spin up the https://8chan.cc domain from a Chinese "bulletproof" registrar. >If we lose Cloudflare, the most likely weakpoint in our current setup <We will switch over to the host's in house CDN for DDoS protection. The site will be down for a few hours to a day as the DNS records update, and we'll have to spend a day or two adjusting some settings. Not a big deal. >Its the end of the world and all the domains got yanked. <Access us via the .onion link and Tor Browser/Brave/Dissenter, or visit the proxies on Redchannit. We can spin up tor gateways on redchannit.net, .org, .com, and .xyz on short notice.
