Visual Novel Thread Anonymous 03/24/2021 (Wed) 00:41:32 Id:2a0bcc No. 267918
The Visual Novel thread is back. Have you anons read anything good lately or been thinking about reading? Maybe looking for some recommendations? Hell, even a good H-scene is worth discussing. Helpful sites >VNDB - Visual Novel Database. Also has reviews and can sort by popularity https://vndb.org/ Most popular VN's: https://vndb.org/v?f=&o=d&s=rating >Fuwanovel - Forum that has walkthroughs for practically every VN's https://forums.fuwanovel.net/ >Nostalgic Visual Novels on-line: Can play old VN's directly in your browser. https://tss.asenheim.org/ I used it for Love Potion, its a great site >Visual Novel Publishers Jast USA: https://jastusa.com/ Jlist: https://www.jlist.com/category/games-computers/visual-novels Mangagamer (won't link it because some of their employees' are not trustworthy but quality is generally not too bad): https://web.archive.org/web/20200904080400/oneangrygamer.net/2020/03/mangagamer-leaked-discord-chat-shows-localization-staff-despise-fans/105399/ >(((Reddit))) r/visualnovels buying guide https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/wiki/buy *Do not under any circumstances buy VN's through Steam. They have been censoring VN's intensely for years now and only get worse with each purchase. If theres no other means to support, try torrenting or erogedownload or another alternative. As for me: Was going through Tsukihime for the first time a few weeks ago had to take a break because of a hard interview and enjoyed it a lot. Music wasn't anything spectacular, but characters were fascinating and had tons of depth. Finished the Arcueid route, still need to go through all the others. Also went through another run of Sengoku Rance, trying to max out on end-game points. Its a lot more fun with overpowered characters and the Masamune family, plus got all the reinforcements, each one is cute in their own way. Probably gonna try out more from Key/Type Moon after doing Tsukihime, was very impressed with it. Any anons here try out Fate Stay/Night or any other notable VN's?
What's that VN where you can date a fridge

>>267918 >reddit >buy How far have we fallen
>>267922 Didnt feel like listing out every publisher, plus jast/jlist aren’t terrible depending on the developer. Just wanted to list the option to people who wanted to support. Some VN’s like majikoi now have a physical release through there anyways.
>>267926 >majikoi >poorly-written, rape-infested shit No thanks. This thread is poorly scraped from /animu/ by the way.

>>267918 I'm also thinking of a fresh run through Sengoku Rance, due to how bad Quest was. Might try for another 5 star demon king route, too. Remember kids: Miko units are amazing!
>>267921 I feel like i should understand this reference >>267931 >majikoi What the fuck? That games nearly all vanilla >>267953 Wasn't quest just translated? I've only heard good things
>>267968 >Wasn't quest just translated? I've only heard good things So far i find a lot of the systems in it kinda annoying (i hated the you can only use a unit X number of times in a dungeon thing in Rance 6 and i hate it here too) but i've heard it gets better as you go. The early game is a fucking slog though, i frequently feel like i just don't have enough characters/moves to complete quests.

Long, cute, funny, actually a nice cooldown so as to not engage the brain in anything suspenseful or complex given my attention span has been short for those types, these days. I'm liking it. Touko best girl. I'll probably re-run Tsukihime myself since it's been a long time, and I want a refresher for when the title releases this summer.

(430.73 KB 1024x768 chaos head.jpg)
I've recently read Chaos;Head through youtube because my PC wouldn't get past the title screen without crashing and it was really good. The horror atmosphere was top notch. Takumi was also a well written protagonist with attributes that people will either love or hate, like how he keeps trying to avoid getting involved with the murders. The part where he finally awakens his Di-sword by Chapter 9's climax was probably my favorite part of the whole thing. However, the writing can get sloppy at times, like Takumi not remembering the doodle Grim sent him in the beginning until it reappears in chapter 8 or 9 or the clumsy foreshadowing of who one of the killers is, thanks to a fucking ringtone and him telling us where it's from. The heroines weren't really well-developed with the exceptions of Aoi Sena and Sakihata Rimi, but I heard that was because it was rushed and the "Noah" director's cut rerelease fixes that problem, so I'm looking forward to the patch/port that Committee of Zero is working on. I'm now going through Tsukihime for the first time as well as reading Steins;Gate again. After S;G I'll start reading the sequel to C;H, Chaos;Child. Heard great things about that one and I'm looking forward to it.

>>268032 Agreed with >>268044, Rance is pretty much an RPG. Kamidori Alchemy Meister is another good one though its long. Monster Girl Quest is another that comes to mind but I haven't done it myself - heard relatively good things about it if you can handle the graphics. >>267979 Damn, that reminds me of the dungeon system in Sengoku a bit. That was one of my least favorite aspects of the game. >>268070 >>267918 DLsite: https://www.dlsite.com/home/ DLsite english: https://www.dlsite.com/home/?locale=en_US DMM: https://dlsoft.dmm.co.jp/ DMM english: http://www.dmm.com/en/ Keep in mind if you have a hacked vita as well, there are a lot of VN's which you can download through pkgj like Steins;Gate, Danganronpa, Utawarerumono, etc. I personally prefer playing handheld than on computer so if thats your thing, take a look into the library. Some people tried to port Higurashi/Umineko and some other vn's to the vita but I couldn't run those for the life of me. There's also a fair amount of VN's coming to the switch as well though I haven't really tried any so I can't speak for its quality. haven't bothered to use the switch yet besides for Our World is Ended which was a meh port of a pretty good VN Not sure about the quality of VN's on other platforms. >>268120 Been planning on reading Chaos;Head, it sounds like the experience itself was well worth it. >I'm now going through Tsukihime for the first time as well as reading Steins;Gate again. >>268139 Well, I might hold off Tsukihime until I finish C;C instead. I will be finishing the dyke Gamedev VN soon. Reading the After story now which also has some implied fucked up shit. When Grisaia's porn scenes finally showed up, I had to take a break because stuff like that is too cheesy for me. The voices are irritating and the actors sound like they're phoning it in. Real hentai has spoiled me I guess. After checking the VN list, the next one I'm interested in starting will be Higurashi. Maybe YU-NO, followed by Katawa Shoujo. Dropped Katawa before due to a botched port I think. Handhelds are the way to go, I agree.

Has anyone read Kana Little Sister? If so, do you read it for the depressing themes or the eroge content? I'm primarily looking for some dark stuff to read, so if eroge content is the main thing, then I'll just read something else.
Also, how is White Album? Should I read the first chapter or just read Chapter 2?
>>268725 It is somewhat depressing but the VN talks more about the acceptance of death and shit, there's only like 3 ero scenes. One of them can't even be skipped so you get basically raped
>>268725 I played it a long time ago when I was like 17. It doesn't have that much eroge content. It's just a depressing love story where a dude falls in love with his dying sister. If you are looking for others to play Saya No Uta is a great one.
>>268950 >>268973 Okay, thanks for the information. I'll be sure to check out Saya no Uta as well. Been meaning to read it for years now but never got to it.

I managed to grab the 8 chapters of Higurashi and used the 07th mod to fix those horrible, abomination sprites. The remakes make them look like Ayys while the originals have not aged well. If I ever got into Umineko, I would use the original sprites for the meme factor. I haven't watched the anime before so Gou was a bit confusing since it skips context like why different grades share a classroom, etc. Also, I got the Windows port of the old school YU-NO installed with the fan translation patch. Might as well grab the voice files too. It's almost hard to believe this game is 25 years old.
>>267979 >The early game is a fucking slog though, i frequently feel like i just don't have enough characters/moves to complete quests. As >>268024 said, cheating is a good option here. Quest is the most Cheatengine-friendly Rance game I've played thus far. The early game really is a slog here, both gameplay-wise and story-wise. But about a quarter in, things really pick up. I'd even say that its gameplay is more polished than that of Sengoku - but you won't notice that until you're at least halfway into the plot. Best thing I liked about Quest is that there's no hard cap on how many units you can have on your roster. That's what I really hated about Sengoku; you can have only like 30 commanders there and that's it. Rance 6 also has a limited roster, but it's much more of a problem in Sengoku. Honestly, Kichikuou Rance is still better than Sengoku. Even though its interface is clunky and ancient.

https://www.gematsu.com/2021/03/tsukihime-a-piece-of-blue-glass-moon-launches-august-26-in-japan >As the subtitle “A Piece of Blue Glass Moon” indicates, it will be “Face of the Moon” edition that contains the stories of the two heroines Arcueid and Ciel. Although this is less routes than the original, those who have played that version will be able to experience this game with a nostalgic, yet new and mysterious feel. The routes not featured in Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon will appear another time, in “another Tsukihime” that depicts “the other side of the moon.”

>>269239 >I managed to grab the 8 chapters of Higurashi and used the 07th mod to fix those horrible, abomination sprites The 07th mod really improved Higurashi a ton. I actually very much enjoyed the lip sync and all quality of life features they added. I couldn't take the sprites in Higurashi seriously until I applied the mod as well. I will recommend, based on my experience, to keep the original sprites + no voice acting with Umineko though. The voice acting has a stellar cast and its outstanding, but imo the voice acting took away from the ambience and immersion the music had originally made. The way ryukishi made it originally was amazing, the suspense is amplified with the music and sound effects. I also used the original sprites which were goofy at first, but as time went on, i believed the expressions to add also to the thrill. When the expressions were well made and the voice acting was top notch, it felt like I was watching a great movie, rather than walking alongside in terror with the Ushiromiya family.

>>272556 I am using the original SE and Music. I will keep the console sprites and voices though. Hearing the girls laugh becomes unsettling once you know how they sound when they're insane. The anime spoiled me so I can't take the old art style seriously, sorry. Oji-san class rep is best girl.
>>268643 In an otherwise pure-hearted route, you rape the blonde foreigner in her sleep for "being a prude" in order to "cement (their) love". I was willing to give the Shiina route a pass despite passing the first and second base and jumping straight to home plate, but I couldn't allow the rape. It was bad enough I had to sit through the game's terrible writing, macguffins, deus ex machinas, and character bias. I also didn't like the OPM-esque powers everyone seemed to have, with not much explanation, though people have told me that bit is nitpicking so I'll let it go. If you want a better 'wacky school slice of life' VN in the same vein then read Cross Channel.

>>272800 dont forget head pats >>272827 I did the same for Higurashi and agreed. I was also impressed with the console sprites that they had the crazy eyes drawn pretty well. In Umineko, I felt that the console crazy eyes were not nearly as intense as the original sprites'. >The anime spoiled me I have been tempted to watch the anime for some time, been hearing very good things about it from people who haven't read Higurashi though. Is it worth the watch? >>272858 >In an otherwise pure-hearted route, you rape the blonde foreigner in her sleep for "being a prude" in order to "cement (their) love". I was willing to give the Shiina route a pass despite passing the first and second base and jumping straight to home plate, but I couldn't allow the rape. Faggot, there is no way you are that much of a pussy. There are tons of great VNs that have rape involved in the story in some way. Grow a sack and remember it's not real. I haven't yet finished Majikoi myself, but I am aware of VN's that do something similar. You aren't supposed to expect a steins;gate level plot and story-telling with this, and you aren't supposed to think too deeply about certain details. The VN is meant to give you a good time and memories, that's all.
>>272858 >rape They were lusting for each other, but the foreigner chick didn't want to go against her controlling father. So MC makes it a a fait accompli through night creeping. Also in the Shiina route, you're supposed to have the intellect to understand that all the joke bad ends where she tricks you into marrying her/having sex with her meant that she'd been wanting MC's dick non stop for over 10 years, and all the MC had to do start fucking her was to say "yes". And the reason he was hesitant to say yes to her before was that he wasn't certain of his feelings for her, and that saying yes without meaning it would be a terrible thing to do to Shiina.
>>273072 >only argument is “w-well, majikoi isnt SUPPOSED to have good writing!!!” By the by, faggot, I love the Rance series and like the comedy in the games - the reason I dont like rape in Majokoi is because it’s completely out of character (though the writing is so terrible at times that a character’s MO changing like that isn’t to be unexpected) and also completely unnecessary, if not entirely forced plot-wise. For the record, I haven’t read Majikoi since I beat it many years ago so my memory is fuzzy but I do remember that the Cap ‘route’, the big sister route, and the sword girl route were particularly shit, though for different reasons. I actually liked Cap as a character until I did his route, that’s how bad and poorly written it was. Again, if you want wacky schoolshit VNs in the same vein go for well written stuff like Cross Channel or Clannad instead
>>272742 There's one where MC ends up as a pregnancy coach and nails all the attendees including his sister and mother in various routes. Pretty good. I forget the name, though.

>>277041 I actually read this one in its entirety some years back. It's a cheap crappy fetish nukige so don't go in expecting much, but it might be worth a few faps. Oddly enough in a game about milfs and pregnant girls the best girl is the one who is initially neither of those things. I read one or two others by the same developer and they're roughly the same sort of thing: lots of incest and pregnancy, and mostly worthless trash except that some of the girls are surprisingly likeable. They also have harem routes, which is nice. >>280297 Emiko annoyed me because she basically hijacks the sister's route and turns it into a threesome route. It seems like they ran out of budget and weren't able to finish both the sister and mother+sister routes, so you reach a choice where one option enters the mother+sister route, and the other just gives and almost instant ending with the sister. Incestuous oyakodon is very important so I get why they prioritised that, but it's a shame that the sister barely gets a route.
